Family barbecue ends in horror attack

- MIKE MCQUAID

A Motherwell woman had two front teeth knocked out when her boyfriend attacked her after a family barbecue.

Brutal Barry Fallon kicked the woman in the face as she lay helpless on the ground.

Fallon, 34, was jailed for two years and four months at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He was also handed a nonharassment order, banning him from having any contact with the victim for four years.

Fallon admitted assaulting the woman to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement in Merry Street and Bellshill Road on May 22.

He also admitted two charges of threatening or abusive behaviour arising from the incident.

Mairi-Clare McMillan, prosecuting, said the couple argued after leaving a family barbecue.

She told the court: “The accused grabbed her by the hair and pushed her to the ground, then kicked her on the head.

“Shortly after midnight a taxi driver saw the woman on the road and pulled over.

“He noticed she had blood coming from her mouth and was missing two front teeth.

“The taxi driver took her home.

“The driver, the woman and her son were all present when the accused then walked towards the house, waving a piece of wood above his head and shouting threats.

“The police were contacted.”

Apart from losing her teeth, the victim had swelling to her jaw.”

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Fallon was “disgusted” with himself.

He had taken a lot of drink and could remember little about the attack.

Mr Bruce added: “He is struggling to understand what happened that night.

“As for the incident at his partner’s home, his recollection is that her son confronted him and my client picked up a bit of wood to ward him off.”

Fallon, who admitted previous convictions for domestic abuse, had his sentence backdated as he has been in custody since May 22.
