Motherwell off the mark with first win
MOTHERWELL ........................................... 1 ST JOHNSTONE ........................................ 0 Mark Pirie at Fir Park
Allan Campbell admits he wants to be a regular on the Motherwell scoresheet this season after netting the winner against St Johnstone.
The midfielder scored the only goal of the game to earn ‘Well their first Premiership win of the season.
After the game, the 23-year-old admitted he has a secret goal tally in mind for the season ahead.
He said: “I’ve not been shy in saying I am going to look to improve myself and try to score goals.
“I just keep working on the training ground and the coaches are helping me, but I just try and put that into the games.”
When asked about how many he hoped to net, he joked: “I’ll just keep that to myself for now.”
The Scotland under-21 cap heaped praise on the “character and desire” of Stephen Robinson’s side, adding: “We were solid and won all the second balls. We managed to dig in to win the game.
“We were compact in our shape and we can build on that.
“We just need to make sure that we are winning games and show the same attitude that we did today.”
After just four minutes, Campbell got the hosts off to the perfect start as picked the ball up and surged at the Saints defence, before unleashing a low drive into the bottom right to open the scoring.
Moments later a Ricki Lamie back pass was snapped upon by Michael O’Halloran but Trevor Carson was quick off his line to deflect the shot wide.
The visitors were coming back into the game as Dan McNamara whipped a dangerous ball into the box and found Callum Hendry unmarked in space – but the attacker couldn’t convert the chance.
Liam Polworth nearly doubled the lead after 59 minutes as his curling freekick from a tight angle on the left forced a finger-tip save out of Elliot Parish.
Craig Conway cut in from the right flank with the rain pouring down to test Carson, but the ‘keeper held the shot well.
