Housing bid for Allanton submitted

-

A new proposal to build a series of homes in Allanton has been formally submitted to North Lanarkshire Council.

The plans, which would be for 61 properties in Mill Road, has been received by council planners and is available to view on the local authority’s website.

The development would be split with 22 social and affordable homes being constructed along with a further 39 for private sale.

The man behind the plans is former Fortissat councillor Tommy Cochrane who quit his role with the local authority last year.

In the planning statement, Tommy, who now runs his own TmC Planning business, said:“This application is to bring back into use a parcel of land last used in the 1950s as a sewerage treatment works.

“To remediate the land for agricultural use would be beyond economic viability.

“The land is within the natural village envelope with the South Calder river making a natural and defensible boundary to prevent development beyond this point.

“This development is designed to encourage new and younger families into the community.

“The added population will address the lack of pupils at the village school, which is running at 57 per cent of its planning capacity, and the wider network of schools that this community supports.

“Retail in the village is confined to one local Spar shop with the integrated Post Office, and a Chinese takeaway.

“The pub and the miners club are now operating on a part-time basis.

“This is not sustainable, and the community of Allanton deserves better.

“TmC Planning would hope that this site if approved, is the first of a few that is required to regenerate the village.”

If approved the number of social housing would see eight, twobedroom terraced homes, 12 three-bedroom semi-detached properties and two, disabled bungalows, which would be two-bedroom.

There would also be four twobedroom bungalows for private sale as well as four three-bedroom semi-detached homes and a mix of three, four and five bedroom detached properties.

The homes would be less than a mile from nearby Allanton Primary School and Hartwood Train Station.
