PUT DEFEATS IN THE PAST

Keeper Liam Kelly focusing on St Mirren

- PAUL THOMSON

Motherwell keeper Liam Kelly has told his side to put their St Johnstone horror show behind them as they head in to a massive week.

The Steelmen head to Paisley to take on St Mirren tonight (Wednesday) and follow that up on Saturday with a visit to Edinburgh to face a Hibs side who racked up their fourth successive win by beating Hamilton 2-0.

Kelly is looking no further than that visit to Saints, and says his side will need a marked improvement from a performance that saw them crash to a 3-0 defeat against St Johnstone.

A Guy Melamed double either side of a Jason Kerr strike saw the points head back to Perth, and Kelly said: “We need to do our best to not think about this game now, isolate the St Mirren game and try to win.

“They are there [sixth] for a reason, they are a good team and we know it’s going to be a really difficult game.

“We need to make sure we work hard and make sure we are at it against St Mirren.”

Kelly admits he was embarrassed that there wasn’t more of a reaction to their 4-1 humbling by Hamilton last week.

He said: “If we play like this again we’ll have absolutely no chance of getting anywhere near the top six.

“But we weren’t even thinking about it.

“All our focus had been on St Johnstone and the performance.

“It was horrible. The first half was so bad and I’m really embarrassed to be honest.

“We got what we deserved. “We never started the game, never played any of the game to be honest.

“That team out there was more than good enough to - I’m not saying to win - but to deliver a performance better than that.

“All 11 of us need to take a long hard look at ourselves because it’s not good enough.

“There wasn’t a reaction to last week.

“The manager told us all week how important the game was and a lot of us were hurting from last week, but we didn’t want to take that into this game, doing anything erratic, anything stupid - just play the game for what it was.

“When you go on the pitch, it’s got to mean absolutely everything to you. It’s inexcusable, we can’t defend that.”
