Litter issues cause concern

-

A long-term Wishaw resident claims parts of the town are being turned into a dump.

Residential and business bins have been left out in Belhaven Terrace, near Wishaw Main Street, and one resident has said “enough is enough”.

The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said:“The entrance to Belhaven Terrace, a street with a great history associated with the success of Wishaw as an industrial town, has descended to a dump.

“Residential and business bins are kept out on the street and never removed to the rear of the buildings.

“Idiots have pushed one of the business bins along the street blocking the road.

“All the money that was spent to improve the main street and 20 metres away a dump. This must surely be attracting vermin.”

The woman has reported the issue to the council’s Environmental Services but has also called on businesses and locals to do their bit. She added:“Quite frankly it’s a disgrace. The council spent millions on redeveloping the town centre but you go just down the road and you see this mess.

“These bins are left on the pavement meaning mums with buggys or those in wheelchairs or mobility scooters can’t get down the pavement.

“I have asked other residents and they also are sick to the back teeth of this.

“We want the council to take action however I also want business owners and other neighbours to take some responsibility.”

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson welcomed the resident’s concerns for her home street and urged anyone to report littering as soon as possible.

The spokesperson added:“We appreciate the resident’s concern, and would encourage local people and businesses to store their bins responsibly. Bins left on the pavement can cause an obvious obstruction which can particularly affect people with a disability.”
