Alexander brushes off red after big win

HIBERNIAN ....................................... 0 MOTHERWELL .................................. 2 Euan Robertson at Easter Road

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander brushed off another red card for dissent as he hailed his side’s ‘brilliant’ win over Hibernian.

The Steelmen claimed their first victory at Easter Road since 2013 thanks to strikes from Jordan Roberts and Devante Cole.

Alexander received a red card in stoppage time from referee Alan Muir but the Motherwell boss refused to let that overshadow a famous win, blanking the incident completely when asked about it post-match.

The ‘Well boss, who has been sent off twice and also booked in his last four games, said: “The last two games have shown, the spirit, the togetherness and the quality we have within the club.

“It’s all underpinned by their work ethic and togetherness. That was a brilliant performance and brilliant result.

“Everything we worked for this week from last Saturday, the players have done absolutely everything that was required of them as professionals.

“The two goals were brilliant with the interplay and how the front three connected. We know we have that quality within the ranks.”

Captain Declan Gallagher made his return from injury in another boost for Motherwell and Alexander praised his side’s discipline rather than focusing on his late dismissal.

Asked again on his disciplinary issues of late, Alexander replied: “How good were our team today? They were fantastic, as soon as they crossed the white line they gave everything for us.

“To come here and win here 2-0 after the previous two results, prior to St Mirren, was brilliant. Every credit to the players. I thought their discipline was brilliant. You’re always going to get things that go against you in games - decisions and goals.

“I thought our discipline as a group of players and staff was fantastic. It was great to see because you’re going to be challenged every week.

“I thought we stood up to that and deservedly won the game.”

Roberts received special praise from the manager after his individual display.

The on-loan Hearts winger showed his pace and composure to fire ‘Well ahead before he assisted Cole.

Alexander added: “Jordan got a fantastic goal for us and competed but the front three were such a handful for Hibs. The midfield three were like dogs of war behind them, getting all the scraps and doing all the dirty stuff.

“The back four and goalkeeper were magnificent.”
