KELLY EYEING ‘WELL STAY

Goalkeeper‘wouldn’t say no’to extension

- PAUL THOMSON

Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly admits he’d love to extend his stay at Fir Park – but admits parent club QPR hold all the cards with two-and-ahalf years left on his deal at the London club.

The 25-year-old ex-Glasgow Rangers player was brought to Queen’s Park Rangers by former Ibrox boss Mark Warburton in June 2019, but he fell out of favour at Loftus Road and returned north in the January transfer window.

Since his loan move to the Steelmen, Kelly has loved being back home and admits he’d love to extend his stay after the end of the season.

Kelly has produced some fine displays since his arrival, solving the club’s issues between the sticks.

Northern Ireland international Trevor Carson and ex-Celtic shotstopper Scott Fox were ruled out through injury earlier in the campaign, while Jordan Archer moved to Middlesborough and Aaron Chapman was unconvincing on his seven outings this term.

So supporters would love to see him stay - and that feeling was reciprocated by Kelly after Saturday’s 3-1 win over Livingston that put them 10 points clear of bottom side Kilmarnock.

He said: “I love it here at Mother well. It ’s something I wouldn’t say no to [staying], but I’ve still got two-and-a-half years left so the power is not in my hands, but I’ll be pushing to play.

“The goalie at QPR [Seny Dieng] is doing really well just now so it may be difficult, but things can change in football.

“I’m their player, but I’m loving my time at Motherwell to be honest. Don’t get me wrong, first and foremost I’m a QPR player and I need to respect that.

“Whatever they say will probably go, but If I’m not going to be playing at QPR I’ll try to go somewhere and wouldn’t’ say no to Mothwerwell.

“I love playing games, I’m grateful Motherwell have given me the opportunity and I enjoy working under the gaffer here. It’s been brilliant, been a great loan so far and long may it continue.”

Motherwell aren’t back in action until March 20 when they travel to Kilmarnock in their final match before the Premiership split and Kelly added: “We can’t get top six now, so it’s important for our own pride and the rest of the season that we perform.

“We’ve got a l ot of fans watching us so everyone has something to play for. When we play Kilmarnock in a few weeks they’ll be fighting for their lives.”
