Go-ahead for homes on club site
Plans to build new houses and flats on the site of the former Cleland Miners Social Club have been given the green light.
The plans, by Rosewood Homes on behalf of Clyde Valley Housing Association, were given the go ahead for the construction of 22 flats and six houses on the vacant brownfield site.
In its final report, council planners stated: “These homes are intended as social housing for rent from Clyde Valley Housing Association.
“One representation has been received from a resident of Baxter Brae who objects to the orientation of flats backing onto his rear garden due to concerns about overlooking, especially as the new flats will be at a higher level.
“The objector believes that the previous permission had its buildings perpendicular to the boundary, which arrangement he considers preferable.
“The proposed layout has been subject to various amendments during the course of the application, although these have mainly affected road design and have not fundamentally altered the layout of the buildings.”
The proposals for the residential development, with associated parking and infrastructure, were first submitted to North Lanarkshire Council’s planning department in July last year.
Commenting at that time, Cleland councillor Louise Roarty said: “The transformation of the site would see affordable housing in Cleland, which is what we are badly needing.
“The building itself was demolished at the start of the year.”
The club, which had been a feature in the village for decades, was forced to close its doors in August 2017.
At that time, the Wishaw Press reported that former club lease holders Paul and Gerard Gallacher blamed the lack of footfall at the club for the sudden closure.
They said that this meant they did not have the necessary funds required to maintain the building and had no other choice but to close down.
