Print talents showcased at final meeting
Members of Motherwell Photographic Society recently put forward their entries for what would have been the final print competition of the season.
Using digital images of the prints that would have been submitted for judging, there were 52 entries across three categories; Beginners, Portraits and Landscape & General.
In the Beginners section, there were eight images. In third place there was“Bokeh at the Squinty Bridge”, a night time shot of the by now famous bridge in Glasgow byVicky Galloway. In second place with 19 points was a colourful image of a derelict and graffitied staircase entitled“Stairway from Hell”. First place, with 20 points, went to“Wrong Move”, by Colin Cameron, a close-up still life of a chess match in black and white showing excellent use of depth of field.
There were 20 images in the Advanced Portrait section. As usual, this was a very close contest among the five photographers who submitted entries.The winning photographs in this section were:
Images with 18 points – Advanced Portrait.“Despair”by Dominic Smith – an image of a“tired”reveller at the Edinburgh Festival;“Robyn”by Brian Saberton, taken during a club Practical night.
Image with 19 points – Advanced Portrait.“Hair Flair Kid” byWilliam Graham, a fantastic image of a young child with her hair flying behind her.
Images with 20 points – Advanced Portrait.“Counting the Pennies”by Dominic Smith. A street portrait taken inVenice of an old woman selling some trinkets.
In the advanced Landscape and General Section there were 24 images from six photographers with results as follows;
Image with 18 points.“AWalk in theWoods”by Dallas Carter is an atmospheric image of sunlight coming through the autumn foliage as a family strolls through the woods on an afternoon out.
Image with 19 points.“Chasing It”by Dominic Smith taken at Fir Park Motherwell and showing two players in action in a match between Motherwell and St Mirren.
Image with 20 points.“Frozen in Motion”byWilliam Graham. A technically proficient studio photograph of a Taekwondo martial arts expert running into a high kick showing excellent use of a slow shutter speed and rear curtain synchronised flash.
Motherwell Photographic Society normally meets on a
Thursday evening at 7.30pm in Holytown Community Centre, but until further notice all meetings will be conducted virtually.
