Allan Campbell insists Motherwell need to get back to basics to make sure of their Premiership survival.

The Steelmen suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Kilmarnock in their last league outing and return to Premiership action on Saturday when they host St Mirren in the first post-split matches.

A morale-boosting 5-0 win at Formartine United in the Scottish Cup at the weekend helped Graham Alexander’s men bounce back from their recent disappointment and Campbell believes their display against the

Highland League outfit shows if they do the basics well, they have the talent to pick up three pivotal points when they host the sixthplace Buddies.

Campbell, whose side are seven points clear of the relegation zone going into the final five matches of the campaign, said: “It will be a tough game.

“St Mirren have had a good season, but if we perform the way we did on Saturday and put in the hard work, our quality can shine through again.

“With t he i nternational break, we’ve been desperate to get out there after that [Kilmarnock game] and get a good performance and I think it showed in the [Formartine] game.

“If we do the basics right this weekend I’m sure we’ll get a positive result and hopefully finish the season on a high as well.

“The priority is to make sure that we are safe.

“Us as players need to make sure we give our all, do the basics well and I’m sure that will give us the positive results that we want.”

Motherwell players savoured their first taste of playing in front of fans this season during the Formartine game.

A sneaky band of supporters scaled trees and stood on containers outside North Lodge Park to watch their side put on a show and Campbell hopes it won’t be long before fans are allowed back to cheer them on at Fir Park.

He added: “I saw them and we went up to them afterwards to applaud them.

“They made a good bit of noise and it was great to have them there to cheer us on.

“Hopefully it won’t be too long before all the fans can come back to games and we get that bit of atmosphere back in the stadiums.

“We didn’t give them a boring game.

“We gave them a good journey home and the main thing was that we won, so everyone is happy.”
