Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) is calling on people to join its award-winning training and employment project.

The AddictionWorkerTraining Project (AWTP) supports, trains and prepares people with a history of drug or alcohol problems to work in the social care field.

If successful with their application, AWTP trainees will be supported over nine months to achieve a recognised qualification in Health and Social Care, while working in placements in local services.

Since 2004, more than 300 opportunities have been created across 15 areas of Scotland. Of these, more than 90 per cent of participants have completed, with 85 per cent securing further employment, the majority to full time positions in the health and social care field.

As well as developing skills and confidence, trainees also receive an intensive package of personalised support and a weekly wage.

A former trainee said:“AWTP has given me a chance at a career that I will love and enables me to provide for my family.

“Theprogrammehasbeenavery exciting and a great experience. I learned so much from both my placements. I feel I have found my calling in life.”

Colin Pomeroy, SDF’s Senior Development Officer for the Addiction WorkerTraining Project, said:“We are delighted to be recruiting new trainees in North Lanarkshire.

“The programme gives those with a history of drug or alcohol problems use a unique opportunity to gain a qualification in social care, with trainees learning about the addiction field and howtosupportpeoplewhoare experiencing issues with substance use.

“At SDF we believe that someone’s experience of substance use is a strength not a weakness as it can help them to understand issues that someone else who is accessing a service may face.”

Applications are currently being taken until April 16. More details, including an application pack, can be found on SDF’s website: sdf.org.uk/jobs
