Name game for play park

The public are being given the chance to name the new public park at Ravenscraig.

Plans for the park have continued over the past fewmonthsandare expected to be completed soon.

And now residents have been invited to name the park and play area through an online survey.

Local Labour councillor Kenneth Duffy told the Wishaw Press:“I’m delighted we’re nearing the first stage of completion for the new park at Ravenscraig.

“The soft opening for June is firmly on track and we now have the difficult task of choosing the name for the park.

“In the absence of an established process for naming parks, in late 2019 we asked local schools to provide suggestions from whichwe’dmakea selection.

“Following the names provided the council have narroweddowntothree choices for the park and three for the play area within the park.

“This gave an opportunity to reflect the play area itself which is large but also to reflect the wide range of suggested names.”

The plan is to put suggestions to the local communitythroughthe MyMotherwelland

MyWishaw social media channels and back to the schools for a vote.

The three names the public can vote for will be Steelworks Gardens,The Craig or Ravens Park.

The play area also has three names the public can vote for.They are Big Play, Minicraig and Metal Wonderland.

A council spokesman said:“Local schools were invited to suggest names for the new park being created at Ravenscraig, andwenowhavea shortlist of three names each for the park itself and the play area within it.

“A short survey has been issued to the schools who took part, as well as local elected members andcommunitygroupsto choose the final names.

“The park is expected to openinthesummer,and will include a play area, sensory garden, visitor hub with a disabled toilet and changing facility and a cafe, a network of walking and cycling routes, a multi sports pitch and an outdoor gym.

“A feature path will run along the line of the historic steel strip mill.

“Within the play area there will be climbing walls, swings, trampolines, bouncing discs, a climbing tower, zip slide, talk tubes, balance beams and posts.”
