Motherwell skipper Gallagher will join Dons in the summer

Motherwell captain Declan Gallagher will leave Fir Park in the summer after Aberdeen confirmed the signing of the Scotland internatio­nal on a pre-contract.

The 30-year-old defender has signed a two-year deal at Pittodrie and becomes new gaffer Stephen Glass’second signing for the Dons after he tempted Celtic skipper Scott Brown to join the club as a player coach.

Gallagher has been the subject of transfer speculatio­n all season as the clock ticked down on his deal with the Steelmen.

A dream move to Celtic was rumoured as well as interest from the likes of Dundee United and Cardiff, but the Granite City will be his next destinatio­n.

Dons boss Glass said:“We are delighted to be able to add someone of Declan’s quality to the first team.

“He is one of the country’s top centre backs and played a prominent role in Scotland’s qualificat­ion for the Euro’s this summer.

“Declan was highly sought after and we beat off stiff competitio­n to get him here.

“But it’s really encouragin­g to see he believes Aberdeen is the correct place for the next stage of his career and we are eagerly looking forward to working with him when he arrives in the summer.”

Gallagher started his career on the books at Celtic as a youth, but never played for the first team. Moves to Stranraer and Clyde followed and he started to get noticed during impressive spells at Dundee and Livingston, who‘Well signed him from in 2019.

His displays for‘Well over the last year have also seen him become a regular in the Scotland squad with this summer’s European Championsh­ips on the horizon.

A Motherwell statement read:“Declan Gallagher has signed a pre-contract agreement with Aberdeen.

“He will leave Fir Park when his contract expires at the end of June.We thank Declan for his contributi­ons across the last two years.

“We will wish him well for the remainder of his career when he departs.”

Motherwell travel to Dundee United tonight and host Ross County on Sunday in their final games of the season, but Gallagher won’t get to say his goodbye to the fans with games played behind closed doors.
