Completion date set for nursery

- BY ROSS THOMSON

A new early years centre inWishawhill is set to be constructed by next summer.

In a report on the 1140 hour nursery expansion prepared for the next meeting of the council’s education and families committee, it has been confirmed the work to repurpose theWishawhill Community Centre into a nursery is expected to be complete in July 2022.

And it is estimated the construction work to refurbish the building into a family learning centre will begin in February next year.

The refurbishment of theWishawhill facility into a family learning centre will make available space for 40 FTE nursery provision for three to five-year-olds and eligible children aged two.

As part of the overall proposals for enhancing nursery provision in the local area, capacity will also be increased at the Craigneuk Family Learning by 16 FTE.

The work at Craigneuk is intended to start in December but the council are still to confirm how long this construction project will last.

Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig Councillor, NathanWilson said:“In virtual meetings with officers and during Education Committee proceedings, I have continually raised the issue of setting a target completion date for the planned newWishawhill Nursery as soon as possible.

“All of the other new build 1140 hour nursery projects in North Lanarkshire are ahead ofWishawhill and putting in place a target completion date was crucial to providing some certainty on when the early years centre in the local area might be ready.

“It is very welcome that this clarity has now been provided with the refurbishment of theWishawhill Community Centre into a new nursery complex expected to begin in February and for the work to be complete by July.

“It is also welcome that a start date for the work to enhance nursery capacity at the Craigneuk Family Learning Centre has been named.”
