’Well legends out in force for charity game
A Motherwell Legends match this weekend will aim to raise over £1000 for local charities.
Local amateur outfit Fir Park Corner are taking on a Steelmen side packed full of heroes on Saturday, with ’Well’s cupwinning star Stevie Kirk joining the likes of Jim Hamilton, Brian Martin and Rab McKinnon in the legends’ squad
The match is being held to celebrate Fir Park Corner’s 20th anniversary and suicide prevention charity Chris’s House and SAMH, the Scottish Association for Mental Health, are set to benefit from the cash raised on the day.
It’s been a year in the making for organisers Chris Jones and David Fraser and the club are delighted to see such a wealth of big names getting involved.
Chris said: “Brian Martin and Rab
McKinnon were good enough to do our kit launch last year and we flagged the idea up to them and chanced our luck.
“There’s always a worry when you start to plan these things that a lot of folk will be out of reach.
“But we were delighted to get them on board and then once they got Keith Lasley in, he got Stevie Hammell, Brian Kerr and David Clarkson involved, so it’s great the names we’ve got for the game.
“There’s been a good bit of interest in it already and we’re hoping for a decent turnout to raise as much as we can, but hopefully at least a grand.
“We are going to do some raffles on the day, we’ll get the legends’ jerseys signed and auction them off over the next few months as well.”
Launched in 2001, the team play in the Internet Football Association Scotland
League and take their name from an online fan forum bearing the same name.
The match was due to clash with Mother well’s Scottish Premiership clash with Rangers at Ibrox on the same weekend, but that game has been pushed back 24 hours due to Rangers’ involvement in the Europa League on Thursday night
Chris added: “We were hedging our bets with the date because we weren’t sure which European competition Rangers were going to be in when we organised it, but the fact the game got moved to the Sunday has really helped.
“It would have taken guys like Keith Lasley and Stevie Hammell out of it if their game was on the Saturday.”
Entry for Saturday’s match is by a minimum donation of £3. There will be a bus leaving Fir Park at 2.30pm and back again after the game. Kick-off is 3pm.
