Alexander backs Covid passports

-

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander has backed a controversial‘Covid passport’ scheme that will be introduced on October 1 for larger crowds attending Scottish football matches.

The Scottish Government hope the introduction of a vaccine certification system – which will come into place for Hearts v Motherwell, Aberdeen v Celtic and Rangers v Hibs – will help control the spread of Covid.

Where crowds are going to be bigger than 10,000, attendees will have to prove they have been fully vaccinated.

Unseated outdoor events attended by more than 4000 people will be subject to the new measures, as are indoor events with more than 500 spectators.

Under-18s, vaccine trial participants and those unable to get vaccinated for medical reasons will be exempt.

And Alexander said:“I think there’s still a pandemic going on, so we have to understand that, and we still have to think of people’s safety.

“We’re all living with restrictions at the moment and I think even after that there are always restrictions in life – you can’t go around doing whatever you want, whenever you want – there’s a balance.

“We want our natural freedoms to be a part of our life, so we have to take small steps forward and not jump in twofooted from a 100-foot board into the deep end, without actually getting the evidence in front of us.

“For me, it’s small steps forward each time. Assess where it is, and if there can be more freedoms allowed then great, but we can’t take our eye off the fact that there is a pandemic going on around the world, and we’re not out of it.”
