Fireworks.. friend or foe?

-

Wishaw’sMSPhas launched a survey on firework use following reported concerns of antisocial behaviour and disruption on and around Bonfire Night.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received more than 1020 calls during eight hours on Bonfire Night, with eight attacks on crews resulting in three firefighters being injured.

Initial figures from the SFRS indicated that crews responded to about 374 bonfires across the country between3.30pmand 11.30pmonNovember5.

To establish the extent of the problem, and how it is affecting constituents, SNP MSPClareAdamsonis encouraging her constituents in Motherwell andWishawtorespondto her survey.

She said:“Leading up to the Bonfire Night, we received reports from residents that there was a significant uptake in antisocial behaviour across our Motherwell and Wishawcommunity.

“This included vehicles disposingoflargeamounts of commercial and domestic waste on bonfires across the constituency, and fireworks being set off throughout the day and night.

“Many constituents were gravely concerned around the sale and use of fireworks as well as bonfires on patches of ground in public places which led to significant damage to property, causing fear and alarm.

“I am asking local residents affected over this period to complete an anonymoussurveyto establish the extent of the problem.

“You can complete the surveyby goingtomy website or by returning the paper survey sent out to over 500 homes that were directly affected.

“I want to thank the heroic efforts of our emergency services for their work to keep us safe, but I utterly condemn the despicable reports of attacks on frontline workers.”
