Ross relishing Irish links at Fir Park

-

Motherwell have added to their Irish contingent - and having an old friend around just adds to Ross Tierney’s enjoyment at Fir Park.

Eighteen-year-old forward Robbie Mahon appeared in a‘Well squad for the first time since signing for the club in late March during Saturday’s 1-0 Premiership loss at Dundee United.

Mahon arrives in ML1 from League Of Ireland side Bohemian, just like Tierney did back in January, who has been showing in flashes his bright potential.

An Irish youth international, the playmaker is joined by his former teammate, Darragh O’Connor and Jake Carroll in Motherwell’s Irish player pool. So it’s a nice boost for the 21-year-old. Tierney said:“Robbie is a good lad who I was with at Bohs. He’s a good lad outside of football as well.

“What he knows is that he’s coming in as a young boy, only 18, so he knows he isn’t going to go straight into the team.

“There’s been a couple of injuries and he got onto the bench for this one. That’s a positive for him. There’s other Irish lads in there as well.

“Darragh and Jake took me under their wings when I came in but it’s a good dressing room. I love going in each day.”

Losing in Tayside sets up a huge game for Motherwell at Ross County. Defeat would leave them at least four points off both fourth and fifth with two games to go against Hearts and Celtic.

Tierney added:“Obviously there’s only going to be one team missing out. We have three games and if we get results we can finish where we want to finish.

“We know we have quality in the dressing room to do really well.”
