Celebrate the jubilee

A host of special celebratio­ns are being organised in North Lanarkshir­e to help mark the historic occasion of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Communitie­s will be celebratin­g the Jubilee with local activities over the bank holiday weekend, from June 2 to 5.

The Lanarkshir­e Beacons will be lit by a musical performanc­e from local schools, and a weekend of fun- filled activities and celebratio­n at Summerlee Museum.

A new avenue of trees will be created at three country parks in North Lanarkshir­e as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy and children and young people will have fun learning about the Jubilee as part of the curriculum as well as sports and physical activity challenges and teambuildi­ng games.

Des Mur r ay , c h i e f e x e c u t i v e o f Nor t h Lanarkshir­e Council, said: “The extended bank holiday weekend will provide an opportunit­y for communitie­s to come together to mark this milestone in royal history.

“A range of community groups have benefitted from the Platinum Jubilee Community Grants, to help fund events such as street parties, tea dances, lunches or to spruce up local areas, in celebratio­n.

“We’re also delighted t o host t he Beacon Lighting event with South Lanarkshir­e Council as part of a programme of local and national events to celebrate this unique anniversar­y.”

The celebratio­ns begin with the lighting of two official beacons in Strathclyd­e Country Park on Thursday, June 2, by the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshir­e, Lady Susan Haughey.

North Lana r k s h i r e Schools Pipe Band will play ‘ Diu Regnare’ and South Lanarkshir­e Schools’ Chorus will sing ‘A Song for the Commonweal­th’.

From Thursday to Saturday, there will be a celebratio­n of the seven decades at Summerlee Museum of Industrial Life.

On Sunday, June 5, the Coatbridge museum will then host an official street party.

The new Queen’s Green Canopy will see the creation of three avenues of trees at Drumpellie­r Country Park i n Coat b r i dge, Palacerigg Country Park in Cumbernaul­d and Duchess of Hamilton Park in Motherwell.
