Railway misuse issue is highlighted for summer

-

Network Rail Scotland and British Transport Police are warning of the dangers of misusing the railway following a series of incidents at Logans Road level crossing in Motherwell.

LastThursday marked International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) and Logans Road has been identified as one of eight level crossings in Scotland with a worrying history of misuse.

Since the start of 2022, there have been six serious incidents reported near Logans Road including trespassing, one where a man climbed on the level crossing barrier, and another where a man forced the barrier open before crossing.

Liam Sumpter from Network Rail told the Wishaw Press:“Misusing a level crossing can be incredibly dangerous.

“Ignoring warning signs and instructions can have devastating repercussions and we want to warn people not to put their lives at risk.

“We work closely with BTP to raise awareness of the dangers of misusing crossings and with local councils and other stakeholders to educate the public on how to stay safe near the railway.”

ILCAD marked the start of Network Rail’s summer safety campaigns which will see the railway industry work with BTP, councils, and charities to raise awareness of rail safety in communities across Scotland.

Team members from both organisations attended some of these locations on June 9, to remind the public of the importance of rail safety and of staying away from the tracks.

BTP Inspector Michael Magee added: “Each year, hundreds of people take risks on and around the railway, resulting in tragic consequences and life-changing injuries.

“We are continuing to proactively patrol the railway network across Scotland.

“Safety is our number one priority and we’re reminding everyone of the importance of taking care around the railway and that everyone loses when you step on the track.”
