The ranking ofWishaw and Motherwell’s top performing secondary state schools has been revealed in the latest league table.

TheTimes Scotland’s 2022 High School LeagueTabl­e calculates a percentage of the number of pupils who achieved the Scottish Government’s so-called“gold standard”of five Highers in 2021.

Figures saw the performanc­es of every secondary school in the country scored on the percentage of pupils attaining five Highers.

Dalziel High in Motherwell was the best performing school in North Lanarkshir­e, ranked at 46, a jump of two places on last year.

At the other end of the table, Clyde Valley High School inWishaw was ranked 327th in Scotland – the worst performanc­e in Lanarkshir­e – while Braidhurst High in Motherwell came in at 316th place.

St Aidan’s High inWishaw dropped from 113th place to 182nd, with Our Lady’s High in Motherwell also dropping from 102nd to 196th.

Calderhead High in Shotts was placed 301st, down one position on last year, whileWisha­w’s Coltness High moved up eight places from 227 to 219.

Elsewhere in North Lanarkshir­e, Airdrie Academy was ranked 138th, a huge jump from last year’s 231st.

St Ambrose High in Coatbridge dropped to 142nd from 77th, Coatbridge High moved from 264th to 242nd and Caldervale High in Airdrie was 243rd from 277th last year.

Across Lanarkshir­e, Strathaven Academy was the top performer, ranked 34th from 342 schools.

That’s a drop from its previous position of 30.

Carluke High improved its position from 246th to 166th.

Mark McLaughlin, education correspond­ent atTheTimes Scotland, said: “The Scottish Government claims it‘does not do league tables’but this is disingenuo­us.

“It discloses an annual school-by-school breakdown of the proportion of pupils who earn qualificat­ions at each level of the curriculum – a league table in all but name.

“By publishing this informatio­n in an accessible and fully searchable guide, we seek to empower parents with informatio­n around the performanc­e of their local schools.

“Five Highers is a good measure of success, but not the only measure.

“For that reason,TheTimes has also published the socioecono­mic profile of the top and bottom schools, which shows some punch above their weight.”
