Dangerous road junction

- Bryan Dunn, via email

I would like give my whole-hearted support to the comments made by Mr Clifton last week regarding the unsatisfactory and dangerous A329 junction which allows traffic to turn right towards Wokingham Station across the path of vehicles travelling towards Reading.

As he explained the traffic lights are green at the same time for both traffic flows. There is a ‘giveway’ road marking for vehicles travelling to the station which is being ignored by too many drivers.

I recently passed through this junction on my way to Reading. I had to stop at the lights and was first in the queue to get underway when the lights changed to green. I then had the most enormous shock when a lady driver swung right across my path towards the station. I had to slam on my brakes to narrowly avoid a collision. I was so shocked I just looked at her in disbelief.

She appeared to mouth to me that her lights were green and what was I doing.

Wondering whether or not I had made an error I revisited the junction the following day which confirmed my belief that the lights are at green for both traffic flows. What the other driver had ignored was the ‘give way’ road marking and possibly not understood the traffic going into Reading was also on a green light.

It would be the height of recklessness for this junction to remain as it. The traffic lights need to be changed so that cars turning right towards the station can do so without the risks currently experienced by drivers. This is about common sense and needs attention urgently, not to wait until someone loses their life.
