Wokingham takes edge in Jim Clarke Trophy battle

IT IS FIRST blood to Wokingham in this year’s Jim Clarke Trophy meeting with Suttons.

The annual event sees the two clubs battle it out over two legs and Wokingham, who hosted the opener, edged to a 90 shots to 87 victory.

The second leg will be played at Suttons in late July.

The top rink for Wokingham was skipped by Bob Thompson along with Len Cooke, Alan Painter and Ron Swan, who won their game by 18 shots while rinks skipped by Martin O’Connor and Jim Rudd were also victorious.

WOKINGHAM B travelled to play THREE MILE CROSS in Division 2 of the Kennet League.

In what turned out to be an outstandin­g match, Wokingham won by 91 shots to 90. Colin Cleverly along with Ted Melber, Brian Hoare and Dave Fielding won by five shots to finish highest up Wokingham rink.

Pat Cleary’s rink also won while Bob HalesOwen skipped his rink to a draw.

WOKINGHAM C travelled to Reading B for their Division 3 clash. Reading emerged victorious by 81 shots to 72 with Andrew Cullington and Keith Roberts both skipping their rinks to wins.

WOKINGHAM A welcomed WOODLEY A to the Reading Road green for in Division 1 of the Kennet LV Over 55s league.

Wokingham won on two of the three triples, winning the match by 62 shots to 35. The highest up triple was that of Paul Aylott along with Len Cooke and Mike Drinkwater who won by 19 shots. Bob Thompson’s rink won by 16 shots.

WOKINGHAM B travelled to play Palmer Park in Division 2. On a very heavy green, Wokingham came away with the spoils winning the match by 67 shots to 30.

Gerry Deeves, Ted Melber and Jim Rudd were all successful with their rinks.

In the same league, WOKINGHAM C travelled to play Trentham A, losing by 62 shots to 39. John MacGregor, along with Malcolm Woolgar and Keith Hutchings were the only winning triple for Wokingham, winning by five shots.

WOKINGHAM D were at home to

Reading B in Division 3. Reading won the match by 58 shots to 38. Wokingham managed one winning triple and that was skipped by Roy Fewster along with Alan Painter and Peter Bennett, who won by four shots.

Wokingham D also travelled to play Great Hollands D and lost the match by 47 shots to 39.

WOKINGHAM OAKAPPLES entertaine­d University of Reading Division 3 of the Thames Valley Ladies League. The University won the match by 68 shots to 49.

Wokingham won two of the three triples and the top triple was skipped by Vidy Melber along with Jill Francis and Rosemary Musto, who won their game by 15 shots.

WOKINGHAM ACORNS travelled to Bracknell for their Division 1 encounter and came away winning on all three rinks. Wokingham won the match by 86 shots to 26.

In a Men’s Friendly match at Great Hollands, Wokingham suffered a defeat to the home team losing the match by 86 shots to 73. The only winning rink for Wokingham was skipped by Len Cooke along with Dave Fielding, Paul Graham and Keith Roberts who won by 12 shots.

Wokingham Ladies travelled to Royal Household for a friendly match on a blustery and wet afternoon. The match was halted after sixteen ends and Royal Household won the match by 45 shots to 42. Wokingham had one winning rink, skipped by Cyndy Price-Finnie along with Jenni MacGregor and Hazel Winstone who won their game by 17 shots.

Wokingham travelled to HURST for a Mixed Friendly and lost the match by 78 shots to 69. Wokingham’s top triple was skipped by Barry Wooley along with Robin Harding and Ann Taylor who won by seven shots.

Wokingham entertaine­d Trentham in a mixed friendly match at Reading Road. Wokingham won the match by 75 shots to 50. The top triple for Wokingham was skipped by Alan Taylor along with Colin Musto and Margaret Allen who won by 15 shots.

THREE MILE CROSS secured an 8-2 win over Reading in the Kennet League LVB but the A team lost by the same score to Prospect Park.

The Thames Valley Ladies team were beaten 8-2 by Palmer Park while Tilehurst beat Three Mile Cross in the men’s National Top Club competitio­n.

Friendly wins were recorded against WARGRAVE and CROWTHORNE.
