What about the walkers?

-

Another footpath in the Woosehill area is currently being resurfaced and this is to be commended as it is used by a lot of people taking children to school or

walking to the station or town centre. However, when I asked whether any lighting was to be installed, the workman there said there wasn’t as it was deemed to be a cycle path.

This is a pity as, with the amount of excavation already going on, the cost to put in some lighting bollards would have been small relative to the overall cost of the job.

I received the same response when the new path linking this path near the Emmbrook footbridge to Meadow Road was being laid.

With the major work to provide a cycle path from Wokingham to Reading obviously costing a huge amount of money, it’s a pity little or no thought appears to be given to improve the facilities for the many walkers in the Wokingham area.

There are far more walkers than cyclists, many of whom would like to use this and other footpaths more often for going to and from the town centre but find them unwelcoming and even dangerous after dark, particularly in the winter.

So please, whoever on the town or borough council is responsible for such works, consider the walkers - they far outnumber the cyclists but are much less vociferous.

Walking is good for health and reduces traffic on the roads so deserves at least a fraction of the vast pool of money that seems to be available for cyclists. Mike Smith, via email
