Wokingham Horticultural Association
BRIGHT summer colours and the perfume of sweet peas and roses met visitors to the Summer Show at St Paul’s Parish rooms on Saturday, June 24.
Unusual, and rarely seen, blooms were exhibited on the benches of home grown flowers, while the vegetable benches displayed early potatoes, carrots and keen competition between enormous lettuces.
Bill and Ruth Howarth enjoy the welcoming and friendly atmosphere of the WHA shows and travel from Mudeford to compete against local experts such as Fred Preston and Guy Masdin. Novice exhibitors are also welcome with plenty of advice available to those wanting to show off the fruits of their gardening labours.
The floral arrangement section had a topical theme with Pauline MacBrayne awarded the Visitors’ Choice for her interpretation of ‘Here comes the Sun’.
WHA President, Jenny Gilbert, welcomed visitors and praised the efforts of all those involved, including exhibitors and helpers, before presenting the cups.
The WHA welcomed Graham Breadmore and Dave Rapley, members of Wokingham Camera Club, who are making a photographic record for the archives. These excellent photos can be seen on the on the WHA website (www.w-h-a.org.uk).
WHA are now looking forward to the Autumn Show on Saturday, September 9, and encourage anyone who is thinking of entering to have a look at the website or come along to the WHA Trading Store in Ormonde Road on Saturday or Sunday mornings to meet the team.
The next event is the Allotments Open Day, organised in conjunction with Wokingham Town Council and at the Ormonde Road allotments on Saturday, August 12, from 2-4pm. Families welcome. RACHAEL NORWOOD
