Former mayor to take reins of Winter Carnival

-

SANTA has a new helper – former town mayor Cllr Philip Mirfin.

He is taking over as chairman of Wokingham’s Winter Carnival from his predecessor, Dave Donaldson.

First held in 1994, the annual street fayre takes place on the last Sunday in November in Wokingham town centre.

And, despite the regeneration works in Wokingham, the event will run on Sunday, November 26, as normal.

The event climaxes in a carnival procession through the streets of the town centre, before finishing with carol singing around the Christmas tree in Market Place, led by the town mayor’s chaplain.

It raises thousands for Wokingham charities each year.

Cllr Mirfin was elected as the new chairman at a recent meeting of the winter carnival’s committee.

His first acts was to pay tribute to Mr Donaldson, who is also heavily involved in the Wokingham Fireworks parade.

Mr Donaldson had been winter carnival chairman for seven years and involved in the event for a decade.

Cllr Mirfin said that Mr Donaldson would be a hard act to follow, as he had set the bar high.

In reply, Mr Donaldson congratulated Cllr Mirfin on his election and express confidence that the Winter Carnival was in very good hands.

Dennis Carver was elected as vice chairman.

The group is also looking for new committee members and local businesses for support.
