Town Hall open for Heritage Day

WOKINGHAM’S Town Hall is taking part in this Sunday’s Heritage Open Day.

The event gives visitors the chance to explore the historic centre of Wokingham, including its prison cells. There will also be displays to explore, a chance to see the the town’s silver, and take part in quizzes.

Always hugely popular, the event will see town councillors act as guides for the day.

Cllr Gwynneth Hewetson said: “Sharing local history is important to the Town Council and we are always delighted when people join us at for our Heritage Open Day to share stories about our town.

“Our history belongs to all of us and helps define and create who we are, and what we want to be.”

And Wokingham Town Mayor, Cllr Peter Lucey, added: “I am really looking forward to meeting you all, visitors and residents alike, on Sunday, at our lovely Victorian Town Hall. I’m sure everyone will enjoy the beautiful rooms, the displays, and the activities that we have planned.

“I will formally open the Heritage Day at 11am, accompanied by our newly-appointed Mini-Mayor, Caitlyn Hyde.”

The town hall is not the only venue to take part in the day.

Other participating venues include: Wokingham Library which will hold a reminiscence morning today between 10.30am-noon). An informative display runs until September 16, while there will be a history surgery on Friday from 9.30am to 11.30am.

St Paul’s Church in Reading Road will be open on Saturday, offering guided tours, as will Wokingham Methodist Church in Rose Street, which this year is celebrating its 200th birthday.

It will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and noon to 4pm on Sunday.
