Sumas fightback comes in vain
Wokingham and Emmbrook 2 Wallingford Town 4
SUMAS paid the price for a horror firsthalf performance as their five-game unbeaten run came to an end at Larges Lane.
Wokingham found themselves 4-0 behind at the break and despite secondhalf strikes from Jake White and Joe Cummuskey, their goals came in vain.
Dan Bateman made four changes from their last fixture, two of which were enforced. Goalkeeper Sean Woodward missed out with a broken finger and was replaced by debutant Owen Holland while the hat-trick hero against Holyport Ellis Day was unavailable after being called up to his parent club Bracknell Town. Ben Broadhurst and Ben Winship also dropped out with Dan Carter, Sam Lawrence and Connor Holland all handed starts.
Title-chasing Wallingford wasted little time in breaking the deadlock and raced 4-0 up with goals from Charlie Silkstone, Ashley Searle, Luke Williams and Lawrence Aitchison.
Bateman made a sub at the break, introducing Broadhurst for Lawrence and the hosts quickly pulled a goal back when the substitute’s free-kick was headed in by White.
Connor Holland then started showing the skill which earned him a recent call-up to the English Schools South West team, beating three men to force a corner.
A red card for Wallingford gave Sumas a little bit of hope and Cummuskey capitalised with his first goal of the season.
White then headed just wide and also found the net shortly afterwards, but it was ruled out by the referee.
Elliott Rushforth also went close late on as Wallingford held on for victory.
Sumas go to Woodley on Saturday (3pm) before a cup clash against AFC Aldermaston at Larges Lane on Tuesday night (7.45pm).
