Kestrels can start looking up as unbeaten streak continues

-

WOODLEY UNITED’S upturn in form continued with two impressive results which lifts them off the foot of the table.

Having began the season with 10 straight defeats, Jon Laugharne’s men are now unbeaten in three games, winning four of their last six.

Their latest victory came on Saturday with a 3-1 success at Chinnor thanks to goals from Sam Guze, Max Laschok and Freddie Barron.

Woodley came flying out of the traps at Station Road, almost taking the lead after just 30 seconds when Barron volleyed over the bar.

But the home side quickly grew into the game with a Jono Malone block and Tom Bryant save keeping the score goalless.

Back came Woodley with both sides exchanging chances with Chace Jewell and Toby Briggs going close for the visitors.

And it was Laugharne’s men who got in front six minutes into the second half after Chinnor were deemed to have handled in the box. Up stepped Guze, who slammed the resulting spot kick into the bottom corner.

That goal gave Woodley extra wind in their sails as they continued to flood forwards and the lead was doubled midway through the half when Laschok found the net.

A Luke Axton-Hall block denied Chinnor at the other end and the Kestrels killed the game with nine minutes to play when Barron got onto a Jewell pass to score his first goal for the club.

The home side did pull a goal back through Ben Knowler, but it came in vain.

And Woodley continued their good form with a 3-3 draw against Wallingford Town on Monday night.

Wallingford, who have lost just once in the league this season, looked like suffering defeat at Rivermoor before snatching a last-gasp equaliser.

Woodley opened the scoring on 18 minutes when in-form Laschok found the net for the third straight game, collecting from Pablo Fernandez.

And that lead was doubled not long after as Leon Mannion’s cross picked out Laschok, whose shot was blocked by a hand.

That allowed Guze to step up and score from the penalty spot, firing past former Binfield goalkeeper Liam Vaughan.

The deficit was halved before the break when a Tom Bryant error allowed Luke Williams to tuck in.

The game was levelled soon after the restart when Euan Aitchinson headed in.

But back came Woodley to retake the lead just past the hour mark thanks to a neat turn and finish from Laschok.

Bryant looked to have won the game for the hosts with a fine late save, but there was time for a twist as Wallingford snatched a draw in the third minute of injury time when Mark Spruyt fired in.

Woodley host neighbours Wokingham and Emmbrook on Saturday (3pm) before a cup clash against Holyport on Monday evening (7.45pm).
