NELLIE KNOWS

- Nellie Williams www.nelliepompoms.co.uk

OH how I laughed on Tuesday at South Hill Park when Rhod Gilbert took to the stage with his ‘A Book Called John’ show. It was funny, witty, entertaining and honest. His observations are what we probably see and hear every day but he manages to weave humour and honesty into a story that left us tickled.

During the performance he talked about strokes (his), dementia (his mum’s), infertility (his), heart attacks (his father’s), death (his mum’s) which are admittedly considered heavy topics and not comedy but he talked about them as if they were the most natural thing in the world to talk about and I applaud anyone who is honest about what is in truth reality.

We went to see Bohemian Rhapsody at the weekend, now that is a good film. I loved Queen, the flamboyance of Freddie Mercury, the music and the legacy.

It was really troubling me where I had seen the actor who plays Roger Taylor, he was Peter Beale (the young one, not Ian’s dad).

The cast was great, the stirring of memories or grey matter was amusing and I left with more questions than I went in with!

Needless to say I have been researching all the answers and never knew that the logo was made up of the band’s star signs - two lions for Leo (John Deacon and Roger Taylor), a crab for Cancer (Brian May) and two fairies for Freddie Mercury who was a Virgo.

The town looked beautiful for Remembrance Sunday, the poppies added interest and as I passed by in the car or on foot I saw something I had not seen the previous time.

I see there are signs for Waterstones and Gail’s so it won’t be long before they are open which will be great for the town.

It has taken ages to get this far but I am ever hopeful that the shops will be what we all want and will be used.

I went to a Post Office / Village Shop in Hampshire today and a little sign said along the lines of “please continue to use the post office and shop, because if the post office goes the shop goes”.

Have to give a shout out to some local businesses: Country Dry Cleaners & Cobbler who reheeled a pair of shoes in a very short time frame and also reheeled and soled my favourite boots so that they look as good as new.

Absolutely Mintage who stock St Eval candles, the Winter Thyme is divine.

Wokingham Decor who never fail to put a smile on my face and give such great advice on DIY (some may say ridiculous ideas I might have).

Gilding the Lily, Jacqueline always makes my nails look fabulous even if I have been harsh on my hands.

My next column will be on Thursday, December 6 (December, what??) and I will be no closer to putting up the tree.

There’s a lot of chat about when people put up their trees, I’m a later in the month real tree woman, no tinsel and no flashing lights kind of girl but I know there are people who have got their trees up already.

I would struggle with this, not because I am a scrooge but because I like to move furniture around and if the tree is up for too long it means it is taking up precious room change space.

Besides a Christmas tree is ever present as the pine needles go everywhere.
