Woodley Townswomen’s Guild

WOODLEY Townswomen’s Guild has been pleased to welcome about a dozen new members over the past few months and we have had some interesting speakers.

Charles Coultas gave a fascinating talk on Bletchley Park, telling us all about coding and how the Enigma code was broken.

Hugh Grainger gave a talk entitled “I’m not old, it’s those tablets”, which was a very light-hearted and amusing look at the problems of growing old. Eleanor Buckley from the Reading charity, Launchpad, came to tell us all about the work being done to help the homeless in Reading.

Our most recent speaker was Dr Michael Keith-Lucas talking about the uses of pollen in forensic science. He explained how it is possible to date an event by analysing the pollen found up the nose or on clothing.

In August our members enjoyed a coach trip to Winchester’s Flower Festival and some members enjoyed a concert by the Woodford Singers.

In October we held an Autumn Social with music provided by the Woodley Ukelele No Strings Attached band (pictured).

Our sub groups continue to meet regularly except for our ramblers who had several outings during the summer but are now resting until the spring.

Our future plans include a trip to Kew Theatre for an organ recital with afternoon tea, a tour of Sonning Mill also with afternoon tea, two Carol Services, lunch at a local hostelry and a Christmas meal at the beginning of January.

We meet on the first Thursday of each month except January at 7.45 p.m. at Chapel Hall, Loddon Bridge Road, Woodley. Our Christmas meeting will be on Thursday, December 6, when we will be entertained by the Woodford Singers. Visitors are very welcome.
