-

standing room only at St Mary's in Twyford as the village turned out to take part in an act of remembrance.

The event was preceded with a Scout parade from Waitrose car park to the churchyard, headed up by members of Thames Valley Police, local dignitaries and the deputy mayor of Twyford's twin town of Cuincy in France.

A short ceremony of wreath laying took place at the war memorial in the churchyard. Representatives from local organisations including the 1st Twyford Scouts and Guides, the Twyford and Ruscombe Women's Institute and the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, laid their tributes at the foot of the cross.

The Scouts then filed into the church which was so full that people resorted to standing in the aisles and the entrance porch so that they could take part in the two- minute silence.

The service was led by the church's rector, the

Revd Anna Harwood, with contributions from her counterpart, the Revd Gordon Connell from the United Reformed Church and Mike Jackson, a deacon from the Roman Catholic church St Thomas More.

Readings during the service came from Harriet Smith and William Walton.

A roll of honour for Twyford was read by Tom Toy, while M. Coquide read out the names from Cuincy.

Hymns included For The Healing of the Nations, Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace and Lord For The Years.

The offering went to the Poppy Appeal and the service concluded with the national anthem.

In the afternoon the deputy mayor unveiled a new plaque at the snooker hall.
