The magic of Malta

Ethereal landscapes, blue lagoons, ancient cities and awe-inspiring architecture – Malta has it all. And, with the capital, Valletta, named as 2018’s European Capital of Culture, there’s no better time to go

With more than 300 days of sunshine every year, it’s no wonder Malta is a sun-seeker’s paradise. But, while it may be well-known as a sun and sea destination, its dazzling diversity stretches beyond the dramatic coastline. With something for everyone, it’s a perfect destination for extended family getaways with Jet2holidays.

Alongside prehistoric temples built 1,000 years before the Egyptian pyramids, ancient fortress cities and picturesque palazzos – all which form part of its 7,000-year history, you’ll discover other-worldly landscapes that make it a favourite with film and TV. Used as the set of Gladiator, King’s Landing in Game of Thrones and Murder On The Orient Express to name a few, its cinematic scenery is jaw-dropping.

Rich in history it may be, but there’s plenty for those looking for adventure too. Perfectly placed in the middle of the Med, Malta’s limestone cliffs and stunning stretches of coast make it one of Europe’s best diving destinations. Dramatic caves, winding tunnels, and crystal clear blue waters means spectacular scuba diving. And if you hop across to neighbouring Gozo or Comino, you’ll uncover an abundance of reefs, shipwrecks and even a lush lagoon that’ll have you pinching yourself. Add in a few family-friendly festivals, pretty harbour towns, museums, and adventure activities, and it’s clear there’s more to Malta than just beaches.

What’s more, there’s no better time to go. The capital city of Valletta has been chosen as this year’s European Capital of Culture, and there will be more than enough events to keep you entertained. From contemporary live art to music festivals and water-borne carnival floats, this city is set to burst into life.

As far as holiday destinations go, it’s hard to find any faults with the island of Malta. From picture-postcard scenery to fun-filled activities and delicious food, you’ll want to return year after year.

Island-hopping

Exploring the Maltese archipelago is a treat. Comino – the smallest of the islands – is a breathtakingly beautiful nature reserve. Home to a blue lagoon, the clear, aquamarine waters make it a snorkeller’s playground and a stunning place to enjoy a beach picnic. Want to explore the island?

It’s the perfect terrain for climbing, abseiling and family-friendly hikes.

Gozo – another quaint island at just eight miles long and four miles wide – is one you could cycle around in a day. A tranquil haven, it’s steeped in myths, mystery, and ancient Ggantija Temples predating the Great Pyramids and Stonehenge.

Seductive cities

If you’re looking for culture, head to the country’s cosmopolitan capital, Valletta. Not only is it 2018’s European Capital of Culture, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, described as ‘one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world’. Enter the maze of St Paul’s Catacombs – one for all the family, marvel at architect Renzo Piano’s remodelled City Gate, and if the kids want to do something different, take a kayak around Valletta Harbour.

The walled ‘silent city’ of Mdina – another gem you must explore – crowns a hilltop and is a real head-turner. Used in the filming of Game of Thrones it’s peppered with medieval buildings, hidden lanes, museums and chapels.

Beautiful coves

Malta is famous for its spectacular coastline of secluded bays and fantastic snorkelling spots. The best way to explore? Sail the crystal clear waters on an island cruise to soak up as much as you can. Most include hotel pick-ups and lunch onboard, plus they’ll drop anchor if you fancy a dip in the sea.

If you’re looking for adventure, you’ll find plenty of chances to try your hand at a watersport. Wakeboarding, waterskiing, windsurfing, jet skiing – you name it, you’ll be able to try it ( just don’t forget your camera!). If you’d rather lounge around in the sun, head for the red-gold beaches on the northwest coast of Malta or the golden stretches of sand at popular Mellieha Bay.

Family fun

For an unforgettable holiday experience, Malta is the perfect destination to head to – especially if you’ve got teens in tow. As well as music festivals, there’s rock climbing, mountain biking and jeep safaris, which will provide plenty of options for family fun.

You’ll also be pleased to hear that Malta offers brilliant foodie choices – from sophisticated Mediterranean cuisine to inexpensive pizzas – to keep everyone happy. Right now, we’re struggling to find a reason not to make this year’s family holiday in Malta…
