BECOME A BLOOD DONOR

-

Ever wondered what it would feel like to save a life? Well, if you donate blood, you can potentially save several lives in one hour. That’s because as many as three people may benefit from a pint of your donated blood.

In the UK, a staggering 5,000 blood donations are needed every day to supply the health service demand. Think you’re never going to need it yourself? Think again. Two-thirds of all blood donated is used to treat cancer, anaemia and blood disorders. One-third serves emergencies such as childbirth, road traffic accidents and operations. At some point you, or one of your loved ones, may be in one of these situations and require a blood transfusion.

The majority of Brits have never given blood, possibly deterred by believing it’s a daunting process. The fact of the matter is that blood donation is straightforward, safe and only lasts as long as an episode of your favourite Netflix show. Your body has approximately 10 pints of blood in it, so rest assured you can safely spare one. In fact, you won’t even notice it’s gone and you’re able to get on with your day as usual straight after. Within two weeks, your efficient bodily systems will have restored the deficit and repaid the debt of the pint you have lost. There are 25 main donor centres and thousands of temporary community blood donation venues in the UK, so you won’t have to travel far, either.

So, if you have a genuine desire to do your bit for others, or the NHS, stick your arm out and give blood. This is one donation that won’t cost you a penny!
