A TALE OF TWO PRODUCERS

A true cottage industry

Lussa gin was set up by three friends, Claire Fletcher, Alicia Macinnes and Georgina Kitching, on the isle of Jura last year, with a ten-litre still in claire’s kitchen. “The opportunities on the island for women are few and far between, yet we have this incredible wealth of natural ingredients,” says claire. “All the botanicals, including juniper, are grown on the island, so we use lemon thyme instead of citrus peel, along with lemon balm, lime flowers, honeysuckle, water mint and sea lettuce. We forage all summer and keep them in the freezer.” The trio have had no training. “We’re all gin drinkers and good cooks, and Georgina is a science graduate. We simply got to the kind of gin we liked by playing around with the flavours. Being on jura is a bit of a challenge – the cost of carriage, for example, is almost as much as the bottles, but we’re having so much fun with it.” Visit lussagin.com
