Getting the best from the NHS: hospital waiting times
The maximum waiting time for a nonurgent treatment on the NHS in England is 18 weeks, from the time the hospital receives the letter from your GP, to the time treatment starts. The NHS e-Referral service allows you to compare waiting times, book your own appointment at the hospital of your choice, and at a time that suits you. You are entitled to be treated at a different hospital if you have to wait longer than 18 weeks – just contact your local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
