URBAN LIVING
Esther Robertson,
57, works in the care sector. She was born in glasgow but has lived in Edinburgh for 40 years. My hOME i’ve lived in my one-bedroom flat, in a quiet cul-de-sac, 15 minutes from the city centre, for the past 26 years. i love my home and i’m passionate about this city. there’s an edinburgh for every decade i’ve lived here, from my teenage clubbing days to my theatreloving, cocktail-drinking self today.
My WORk name a job and i’ve probably done it, including stand-up comedy and a bit of acting! but for the past 12 years i’ve been working in a residential centre supporting young adults with visual impairment, and i feel i’ve found my calling. it’s so satisfying. My favOuRitE placE the scottish national Gallery of modern Art. it’s a lovely walk, past the river, through the atmospheric Victorian dean Cemetery. there’s a lovely café, and amazing surrealist and contemporary art.
BESt thing aBOut living hERE i feel in the centre of everything. Anything you want to tap into – music, culture, food, comedy – is here. And not just in August during the edinburgh Festival. thE DOWnSiDE the noise can get a bit intense sometimes.
My cOMMunity i have a good mix of old friends and new finds that i’ve met through my partner, Gayle.
What i DO in My DOWntiME Gayle lives in dundee, so we divide our time between each other’s homes. if i go to her, we’ll walk on the beach or see friends. if she’s with me in edinburgh, we’ll go to the cinema – we’re both film lovers – or to a comedy club. w&h
