Planet celebrity Perfectly Poldark! On-set exclusive

Woman gets the behind-the-scenes gossip on the new series of the Cornish saga

No drama does a cliffhanger like Poldark, and when we last saw the raven-haired hero his marriage to Demelza appeared to be back on track, but it seemed another literal bump was on the horizon. Demelza’s love rival Elizabeth was expecting a child not long after an illicit night with Ross and after marrying his nemesis George warleggan. Talk about complicated! we caught up with the cast on set to find out what’s in store for the third series...

‘I just try not to fall off the horse!’ aidan Turner tells us how he’s dealing with the pressure of being Ross Poldark.

Is Ross still causing trouble? He’s grown up a bit – he’s not having scraps in the pub this time. He nearly lost his wife, so he’s conscious of not making those mistakes again. But then he’ll do something outrageous. Maybe he has the intention to be less reckless, but that’s not necessarily the execution.

Has he lightened up at all? I don’t know. I think that’s just me and my brooding look! Sometimes I play a scene with Demelza and think I’m being fine, but then I’ll watch it and think, ‘Jesus, what an idiot!’ I’d still have a drink with him though. Ross is a good drinker.

Is the line between you and Ross more blurred after three years? We were filming a party scene, and as Ross isn’t very sociable, it was out of his comfort zone. But I wanted to go home too. Ross didn’t want to be there, so I didn’t either!

Have you given the new cast any advice? Yeah, don’t look me in the eyes! [laughs] Of course that’s a joke. We’re all good mates and support each other – we’d be there if anyone had a meltdown.

with two successful series behind you, is there pressure to keep delivering? I never really felt the pressure. I keep my head out of it, because I don’t know how you transform that pressure into something positive. I just try not to fall off the horse!

what’s the fan reaction like? I get really nice fan mail from all over the world. There were a lot of knitted Poldark dolls last year that a lot of work had gone into, that was sweet.
