‘IT’S HARMLESS FANTASY’

-

Nilufer Atik, 44, is a writer from Surrey. She lives with her partner, Matt, 39, and their son, Milo, three. I don’t understand why such a fuss is made when films like 365 DNI or Fifty Shades come out. Fictional films like this are about fantasy and escapism, and a good way for couples to get ideas for role play or experimentation in the bedroom. I loved Fifty Shades and thought 365 DNI, while a little tacky, was also just harmless fun. These films are especially appealing to women as they’re like watching soft porn with a storyline and romanticism thrown in, rather than meaningless sex, which is all pornography is.

I don’t see how they’d cause someone to commit any kind of sexual violence or coercion, as we forget the sex in these films is consensual. That’s the key. Even in 365 DNI, Massimo says he won’t touch her unless she wants him to.

No victims here

In Fifty Shades, there’s lots of BDSM, but also tender sex – and, again, the female character is a willing participant. Both the females in these films are headstrong, intelligent and sexy, and certainly aren’t portrayed as victims. In fact, it’s they who ultimately have control over the men, which I think is empowering, not demeaning.

A lot of women also fantasise about being sexually dominated by a man – and it is just that, a fantasy. These films are a way they can indulge in their imaginations without actually putting themselves at risk, and they shouldn’t be judged for that, or made to feel ashamed for enjoying them.
