July

✱ TOMATOES Trusses should be maturing nicely. Check for signs of splitting and blossom-end rot. If found, remove and ensure consistent watering to prevent damage.

COURGETTES Harvest courgettes while young (10cm) for the best flavour. Cut off with care to prevent damage to the plant, and use swiftly or store in a fridge for a few days.

August

✱ RUNNER BEANS Pods are forming, so keep picking while they’re young. Pinch out the leader shoots as plants reach the top of the supports, water and give a liquid feed.

✱ AUTUMN RASPBERRIES Keep an eye on them and start picking from mid-august. If berries are slow to develop, give plants a weekly soak. ✱ APPLES Pick early mature apples, such as ‘Discovery’. Eat now or store in a salad drawer to keep fresh.
