‘Tom Lister cracks us all up backstage’

Singer Sheena Easton on taking the stage by storm

-

The biggest Broadway show, 42nd Street, has arrived in London. How’s it going?

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane has a magic, an energy to it. It has its own personality. You kind of feel that you have to live up to its grandeur.

Any mishaps working with ex-emmerdale star Tom Lister?

Oh please! He’s so difficult to work with, such a prima donna! Tom’s great. He’s the best. In the wings he spends most of his time trying to make us all crack up.

You’re doing eight shows a week – that’s a tough gig.

You just have to focus and keep the energy up because these characters demand it. They are larger than life people, so you need to bring that energy every day and you’ve got to wind yourself up to it.

How is this different from Vegas, where you live, and Broadway?

It felt like coming home in this theatre but it is different from when I do my own show. But that’s what’s been great about my career – the variety makes me still want to do it 40 years on.

You sang For Your Eyes Only – what’s your memory of Sir Roger Moore?

I met him briefly to promote the theme song and I can say his personality was everything that I hoped it would be. He was suave, sweet, kind and charming. 42nd Street is booking now
