Telly talk: Neighbours’ Susan Kennedy

-

Since Neighbours’ Susan Kennedy arrived in Erinsborough nearly 23 years ago, she’s been through the mill. Her husband Karl has had affairs, she’s lost 30 years of her memory and been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. But the last few weeks have been some of her toughest yet. Actress Jackie Woodburne, 61, tells us more…

Hi Jackie! It’s been a dramatic time for Susan recently… It started with the arrival of Finn Kelly as a new teacher at the school. Finn had a romantic history with Susan’s niece Elly Conway, but Elly was quite dubious about him, she thinks he always has an ulterior motive. He’s prepared to go to extreme lengths to get what he wants – the job as school principal.

How bad is it going to get for Susan? Finn affects several characters. He’s very manipulative, a smiling assassin. There’s a lot at stake for a lot of people.

How will Susan cope? It will become part of her life’s tapestry I guess, like all those things that have happened to the poor woman in the past. I think ultimately, being Susan, she does come back strong.

What do you love most about being in Neighbours? Every week it’s different. My favourite stuff with Susan is the work that involves the young people. I love their energy and enthusiasm. And of course working with Alan [Fletcher, who plays Karl Kennedy] is a joy every day. We just have so much fun and we love each other.

You took a trip to the UK recently. How did you enjoy it? I love London, I’m always happy to come here. I did the mandatory stuff, had a look at Tower Bridge and the palace. They’re iconic London things that you have to see every time. It’s one of my favourite places.
