Swine flu was the name given to a new type of virus responsibl­e for a global flu outbreak in 2009-10.

It started in Mexico and spread rapidly. Most cases in the UK were relatively mild – although serious cases still occurred.

The small number of serious cases or deaths were mostly in younger adults and children – those with other health problems – and pregnant women.
