1 SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY

Many people who have to be out of the house during the day – whether that’s for work or other commitments – need help looking after their pets, and this could earn you some cash. For example, you could make between £10 and £15 per hour when dog walking. It’s also great exercise. You could also earn some cash by offering drop-in visits, such as going to the owner’s home to feed and spend time with their cat. You may be able to net even more by looking after pets when people go on holiday. For example, you could be paid to stay in someone’s home while they’re away to keep their pet company, provide meals and go on walks. Find out about the many types of services at rover.com.

2 GETTING STARTED

Websites, like Rover, connect pet owners who are looking for someone to care for their pet with those wanting to do it. Before signing up to any website, always check the T&CS including fees, and read reviews. You could also offer your services locally by either putting up notices in local shops or posting on local Facebook groups.

3 DO YOUR RESEARCH

Make sure that you’ve considered everything you need to before you start. For example, you’ll find lots of useful information in the Professional Dog Walkers’ Guidelines, which are available at rspca.org.uk. Furthermore, whatever type of pet services you’d like to offer, ensure that you have the right insurance in place. There’s a useful guide at comparethemarket.com. Finally, check if you need to tell HMRC about additional income. Visit gov.uk/check-additional-income-tax.
