Why You’ll Love... Brighton, East Sussex
Magically uplifting, everyone is welcome, including your dog!
Popular since regency times and the backdrop to such classic films as Brighton
Rock and Quadrophenia, the vibrant city of Brighton has been dubbed ‘London-ByThe-Sea’. Boasting cultural kudos, theatres, music venues, historic houses, burgeoning nightlife and an iconic pleasure pier, the main esssence of the place is its inclusive, welcoming vibe.
What to do
Brighton is renowned as one of the most dog-friendly places in the UK, so it’s the ideal place if you’re looking for a weekend beach break with your pooch. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are only permitted on certain beaches, but don’t fret, there are plenty!
But Brighton’s appeal is broad, whether you prefer to browse curiosity shops, learn its history or eat while watching the sun set over the sea.
Where to go
One of the city’s biggest draws is its pleasure pier. With an impressive history, it’s now home to fairground rides and attractions, an amusement arcade and food stalls (but watch out for those chip-nabbing seagulls). And, with 67,000 sparkly lights illuminating it at night, it’s a real beauty.
The Lanes are a maze of narrow streets, with independent shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and jazz venues. It’s a great place to lose yourself and soak up the unique Brighton atmosphere.
What to eat
You’ll find the usual chain restaurants in the centre, but head to the North Laine district and you’ll find independent eateries like Wai Kika Moo
Kau and Infinity Foods Kitchen, and the UK’s first permanent zero-waste restaurant Silo. Serving locally grown, seasonal food, it throws nothing away! It’s even built from upcyclables.
Where to stay
At the Old Ship Hotel (thecairn collection.co.uk/hotels/ the-old-ship), literally a stone’s throw from the promenade, your pup gets a warm welcome. In the room, there’s a doggy bed, bowls and treats! In fact, the only place dogs aren’t allowed is in the main dining room.
