Harbour seals swim to new shores
With the harbour seal population in decline in parts of Scotland where they were once abundant, it’s great news that London’s Canary Wharf has become an unlikely hotspot! More sightings have been reported around here than any other area along the Thames Estuary, perhaps because of its proximity to Billingsgate fish market. But they’ve also been spotted as far upstream as Hampton Court Palace, or even basking on the riverbanks of Greenwich. DID YOU KNOW? Some seals can hold their breath for nearly two hours underwater as they conserve oxygen and slow their heart rate.
