PAST IT?

-

As the saying goes, you are what you eat. What does that mean then, if we eat food that has passed its use-by date? According to a study conducted by BBC Good Food, 42 per cent of those quizzed would eat poultry and 39 per cent would eat seafood that has passed its use-by date. Many of us treat these dates more like vague guidelines in order to waste less food. So is this habit of ours frugal or irresponsible? According to the NHS, a use-by date means that food must be eaten by that time, whereas a lot of food is safe to eat after its bestbefore date, which is different. In short, it’s better to be safe than sorry. That funky-smelling fish just isn’t worth the risk!
