Boxygen at Power of Boxing

Move over, boxercise. This new, hard-hitting class with all the authentic grittiness of proper boxing is taking over – and it’s a toughie

WHAT IS IT?

We’ve been spoiled with all the plush boutique gyms popping up around the country. But posh toiletries, hair straighteners and juice bars will not be found at the boxing gyms where Power of Boxing’s classes are held – and we kind of like it. The authentic gyms are home to amateur boxers, with former boxers and reformed offenders coaching and taking classes. One of the venues is actually one of London’s oldest boxing venues, and the vibe of this history resonates through the building. Other than floor space, boxing rings and punchbags, there’s not much else to distract you, which means there’s nothing to do but work. Expect lots of full-body resistance exercise intertwined with shadowboxing, technique and mitt work for a full hour.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Despite what it looks like, boxing isn’t just a workout for your upper body – although your arms will be on fire by the end of it. Movement in boxing requires recruitment from almost every inch of your body, especially the glutes, core and shoulders. Piecing together and responding to combinations require mental sharpness, speed and agility, which is something not many group exercise classes can deliver. And everything in between? There are plenty of burpees and press-ups in between the rounds hitting mitts, and then a good dose of core work before the cool down.

HOW HARD IS IT?

Don’t be intimidated by the old-school feel of the gym. The class involves no sparring or contact at all, and while you will catch glimpses of some amateur boxers training around you, you won’t be put through your paces as if you were preparing for a fight. Despite this, it’s pretty hard – especially if you’re not used to boxing classes. And even if you are, this one is especially hard because of its roots in boxing as a sport, rather than just a fitness tool. You’ll be out of breath, sweating buckets and potentially feeling a bit sick at some points – but always having fun!

WHERE IS IT?
