WHAT IS IT?
Getting a sweat on in a hot room full of people might not sound that glamorous, but nailing your arm-balancing poses like the crow, crane and dolphin is. While attempting these holds in a regular class might seem too rushed to be able to really get it right, the Fly class adopts almost a workshop structure geared around helping you do just that. You will be taken through a flow sequence specifically devised to prepare the areas recruited for the pose before taking you into it, step by step. The teacher will then be on hand to give you pointers to improve your hold – attention you probably wouldn’t get in a regular yoga class.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Aside from learning how to get in and out of the poses safely and efficiently, you’ll really notice your strength improve. The poses require a lot of upper-body strength, and while your muscles will give up on you halfway through attempting them, you’ll notice yourself get better with each class. Then of course, there are all the pros of simply doing yoga. The hot room gets you sweating and detoxified, the flows will boost mobility and flexibility and the practice will calm the mind.
HOW HARD IS IT?
Perfecting the poses of course takes practice and regular attendance, but you’d be surprised at how quick progress is. Just a pointer or adjustment here and there goes a long way, and seeing yourself improve really pushes you to try harder. The room is hot, so you’ll feel more challenged than usual, but you’ll notice that this actually helps you with your practice once you’re used to it. Surprisingly, Fly is useful (and fun!) for beginners and regular yogis – beginners get to try the basic poses while more advanced participants can try progressions.
