SBPMS is a nationwide competition that gives you the chance to realise your fitness model dreams. Hopefuls are put through their paces by top industry professionals and fitness competitors at regional heats before the finalists are chosen for the big event. From 500 competitors, only 50 made this year’s finals, and only two (a female and male) can claim the crown at Bodypower Expo.

Unlike other similar competitions, BPMS contestants are judged 50 per cent on their physique and 50 per cent on their overall marketability and stage presence. For most of these competitors this is their first time up on stage, bearing all in a swimwear and activewear round. So how does it feel to win? This year’s winners were Sonjia Ashby and Ike Agho – we caught up with Sonjia (@sonjia_ashby_fitness_) to find out all about it.

Ddreams really y do come true

‘I’ve been active and interested in sports since school. However, my interest in weight training started just before I got pregnant with my daughter, who’s just turned three!’ explains Sonjia. So, what made Sonjia sign up in the first place? ‘I was turning 40 in November and had an interest in the competition side of training. The gym where my PT business is based was holding a casting for the Body Power Model Search and a friend suggested I give it a go!’ The rest, as they say, is history...

To get competition ready, Sonjia worked hard on tailoring her training and nutrition and worked with PT Dan Wynes who has specialised knowledge of competing. After 12 weeks of training, the big day arrived: ‘Yes there were nerves but after all the training and preparation, it’s a natural progression to want to get on stage! The transformation I’d gone through mentally, as well as physically, made me feel empowered. I felt totally overwhelmed by winning. I think because I was one of the oldest girls in the competition (if not the oldest) I just didn’t expect to win!’

Although a huge congrats to Sonjia are in order for her win, she’s keen to remind us all that it’s not just about winning: ‘The best thing about taking part was sharing the journey with other like-minded people. The physical transformation is awesome, but more importantly, knowing I have the willpower and determination to push through some hard and testing times and never give up is amazing.’ If you’re thinking about giving it a go, Sonjia has some sound advice: ‘Just do it. Yes, it’s challenging, but overcoming any challenging situation in life is rewarding and a great feeling.’

So what’s next for Sonjia? ‘This is just the beginning for me. I’m looking forward to the trip to India or China with Body Power and the photoshoots. I want to share nutrition, training and lifestyle tips as I pursue getting fitter and stronger!’
